The story of the hero Andriy Lemak:
He lost his sight, but not his faith in life

On February 24, 2022, the life of Andriy Lemak from the village of Volia in the Lviv region changed dramatically. A volunteer since 2014, he went back to the front to defend his homeland. But the war treated him cruelly: a severe injury, loss of vision, an artificial nose, shrapnel all over his body…

The 47-year-old man, once strong and robust, found himself in a new reality.

It is hard to imagine how much pain, suffering and loss Ukrainians have experienced during the 2 years of the full-scale invasion… Many soldiers laid down their lives to preserve their independence. Many more were injured and disabled, but did not lose their lust for life and faith in victory.

Andriy Lemak from the village of Volia in the Lviv region has been defending the state since 2014, and on February 24, 2022, he went to the military registration and enlistment office and took up arms. He fought as part of the 24th King Danylo Brigade in Luhansk region.

In the spring of 2023, he was seriously wounded and hospitalized. He underwent numerous surgeries on his face. He has shrapnel all over his body, an artificial nose, no sense of smell and a poor sense of taste. But the worst thing is the complete loss of vision.

“He is only 47. He was strong and vigorous a year ago, but now he is helpless and helpless,” says his wife Liuba.

But Andriy doesn’t give up!

He constantly jokes, supports his family, and shares interesting stories. The hero has already learned to walk in the new environment and is mastering walking with a cane. This is a necessary skill for blind people. Andriy is very fond of dogs, and when he became blind, he started thinking about getting a guide dog. It would help him to be independent in everyday life.

A dog is not just an assistant, a friend, but also a lifeline. Nowadays, it’s hard to get to the pharmacy or store on your own, or go for a walk. It’s even harder to navigate in space. With a trained dog, it will be much easier. Guide dogs are carefully trained to meet the needs of visually impaired people. The dogs undergo complex long-term training and make life much easier for the blind.

We met Andriy Lemak at a training course organized by the Alliance for Veterans Who Lost Their Sight in March 2024. Subsequently, the Alliance for Public Health organized a meeting for Andriy with his four-legged friends at a dog training center. He was delighted! He finally realized that he really wanted such a faithful assistant. However, the cost of a guide dog and the necessary training is more than 150 thousand hryvnias. This is an unaffordable amount for a family.

In the end, the Alliance for Public Health promised to help the hero raise the necessary amount.
